Chapter Fourteen

Ash crept down the concrete labyrinth of tunnels beneath the racetrack. Above her, she could hear the roar of the crowd interspersed with the loudspeaker. Since there were so many languages spoken in the region, they had to repeat every message more than once.

Ashley wondered if she was embarrassing herself. After all, what did she know about racing? Maybe this pit crew member’s job was to…run off into the bowels of the arena looking shifty as fuck?

No, that’s not it, girl. You’re onto something here. Your business acumen is so keen because you know when something is off. There’s something off about Mr. Shifty here. Something familiar, too, but I can’t place it…

Ashley was obviously not a trained ninja, but she had mastered the art of moving silently because she liked to eavesdrop on her parent’s discussions on business. Ash had even looked up stalking techniques on the internet to improve her stealth capabilities. She slipped off her high heels and walked along barefoot in her breezy floral print dress. Her gay attire contrasted with the special forces-type bullshit she was trying to pull off, and Ash knew it.

Still, if she didn’t at least check the guy out, and something bad happened…Ash wouldn’t be able to live with herself.

The man led her down a long concrete rampway. Ash could smell the musty tang in the air reminiscent of being underground. From somewhere she could not see, water trickled, perhaps through a set of pipes.

They were in the depths of the arena now, the bright Moroccan sun blocked by tons of concrete. Ash wondered if her life had suddenly become operatic. It certainly seemed opulent and over the top to be plunging into the depths of Hell itself, following a suspected demon.

Pipes and bundled wires snaked overhead and disappeared into the thick concrete walls. Ash moved carefully, walking toe to heel, carrying her shoes separately so they wouldn’t clack together and make noise.

The man continued on his way, seemingly oblivious to her presence. Ash’s heart pounded in her chest. It occurred to her that if the man turned out to be up to no good or hostile, she was far, far away from help. She doubted anyone on the surface could hear her if she screamed for help.

She extracted her cell phone and attempted to dial Blaze or Flair but found she had no signal.

Oh, that’s just perfect. What’s next? Spooky music? Me tripping over nothing?

Ash spelunked along, glad for the weak lights flickering overhead. As they descended further below ground, the lights grew more intermittent. The hallway was dotted with areas of complete shadow interspersed with pools of radiance.

She turned a corner and found her quarry simply gone. Ash paused, head swiveling about as she swept her gaze around, searching for the pit crew. It was as if he’d never existed.

Ash racked her brain. Had the man turned off into a dark tunnel, and she’d missed it? She struggled to remember the exact last time she’d seen him. Then, ash realized she had heard him more often than sighted him.
